Why is my smoke detector beeping and how to stop it?

It happens to everyone, eventually. You are sleeping soundly only to be awakened in the middle of the night with a periodic beeping sound that will not stop. For most, it is just a little chirp every three or four minutes; for some, it could be a panicky smoke detector sounding the alarm at full blast.

Your smoke detector is trying to tell you something. Most of the time, it is telling you to change the batteries. But what if it continues to beep even after the batteries have been changed?

Smoke detectors, for the most part, are pretty simple pieces of machinery. Even though the chirping or full-on beeping is annoying, it can be solved pretty quickly.

Here are a few things to try to quiet your smoke detector:

  1. Change the batteries first - Even though most smoke detectors are wired into our homes' circuits, they still have batteries that need to be changed. If the batteries are low, it will chirp to let you know. After changing the batteries, make sure the casing inside is free of dust, rust, or small debris.
  2. Reset the alarm - If the beeping continues even after you have added new batteries, it may need a reset. Look for a reset button on the bottom, unplug and dismount the alarm, then hold the reset button down for a full 20 seconds. This should do the trick.
  3. Give it a good cleaning - If it continues to make noise even after you tried the rest button, you need to clean it out. This doesn't mean taking it apart. The best way to clean it out is to spray it thoroughly with a can of compressed air. The components are pretty sensitive and may not work correctly if hindered by dust.

Called 15 minutes before they opened on New Year's Eve morning because we were having electrical issues that began overnight. Adis, himself, answered the phone and luckily had an opening later that day because I was conveniently located near his prior appointment. Long story short, he identified the issue (surge from Oncor's end) that fried my "legs" coming from Oncor box to my electric panel, suggested I request Emergency Services from Oncor to confirm issue was on their end. I did so, and we replaced the fried "legs". Oncor shows up, confirms issue on their end, and sets up temp. power to be replaced a week later (all went fine with Oncor surprisingly). I wouldn't have known where to start if it wasn't for Adis and his son's quick response the day of. They were very polite and professional, and did identify my electrical panel was done illegally (without a permit), and some things he suggested would need to be addressed. That was obviously done before I purchased the home. I'll be using Adis Electric for any electrical issues/services going forward because of my great experience with them.

This company is so thorough and professional starting with the call to make an appointment. They were very clear about their service fee and explained how they provided up front pricing prior to repair. They also got a history of problems or issues with the outlet in question. Then followed up with an email confirming the appointment and a 1 hour window text the day of service which included a bio of my future service tech.
